Valentine’s Day in China
在中国,一年有几个可以表达爱意的日子。
Zài Zhōngguó, yī nián yǒu jǐ gè kěyǐ biǎodá àiyì de rìzi.
In China, there are several days throughout the year when people can express their love.
最出名的是二月十四日的西方情人节、农历七月初七的七夕节,还有一个特别的日子——五月二十日。
Zuì chūmíng de shì èr yuè shísì rì de Xīfāng Qíngrénjié, nónglì qī yuè chū qī de Qīxījié, hái yǒu yī gè tèbié de rìzi——wǔ yuè èrshí rì.
The most famous ones are February 14th, the Western Valentine’s Day; the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar, the Qixi Festival; and a special day—May 20th.
二月十四日是西方情人节。
Èr yuè shísì rì shì Xīfāng Qíngrénjié.
February 14th is the Western Valentine’s Day.
这一天,年轻人会给爱人送玫瑰花和巧克力,一起看电影、吃晚饭。
Zhè yī tiān, niánqīng rén huì gěi àirén sòng méiguīhuā hé qiǎokèlì, yīqǐ kàn diànyǐng, chī wǎnfàn.
On this day, young people give roses and chocolate to their loved one, and go to see movies and have dinner together.
街上很热闹,到处都能看到牵手的情侣。
Jiē shàng hěn rènao, dàochù dōu néng kàndào qiānshǒu de qínglǚ.
The streets are very bustling, wherever you go, you can see couples holding hands.
七夕节是中国传统的情人节,在农历七月初七。
Qīxījié shì Zhōngguó chuántǒng de qíngrénjié, zài nónglì qī yuè chū qī.
The Qixi Festival is China’s traditional Valentine’s Day, falling on the seventh day of the seventh month on the Chinese lunar calendar.
它来自牛郎和织女的爱情故事,代表思念和团圆。
Tā láizì Niúláng hé Zhīnǚ de àiqíng gùshì, dàibiǎo sīniàn hé tuányuán.
It comes from the love story of the Cowboy (Niulang) and the Weaving Girl (Zhinu), representing missing and reunion.
以前女孩们会在这一天做手工,现在年轻人也会送礼物、一起吃饭。
Yǐqián nǚháimen huì zài zhè yī tiān zuò shǒugōng, xiànzài niánqīng rén yě huì sòng lǐwù, yīqǐ chīfàn.
In the past, girls would do handicrafts on this day; nowadays, young people also give gifts and eat together.
五月二十日是一个很特别的日子。
Wǔ yuè èrshí rì shì yī gè hěn tèbié de rìzi.
May 20th is a very special day.
因为在中文里的“520”的发音像“我爱你”。
Yīnwèi zài Zhōngwén lǐ de “wǔ èr líng” de fāyīn xiàng “wǒ ài nǐ.”
Because in Chinese, the pronunciation of “520” sounds like “I love you.”
这不是传统的节日,但是很多年轻人喜欢在这一天表达爱意。
Zhè bù shì chuántǒng de jiérì, dànshì hěnduō niánqīng rén xǐhuān zài zhè yī tiān biǎodá àiyì.
This is not a traditional festival, but many young people like to express their love on this day.
他们发微信红包,比如5.20元、52.0元或者520元。
Tāmen fā Wēixìn hóngbāo, bǐrú wǔ diǎn èr shí yuán, wǔshí èr diǎn líng yuán huòzhě wǔbǎi èrshí yuán.
They send red envelopes on WeChat, for example, 5.20 yuan, 52.0 yuan, or 520 yuan.
也有人在这天订婚或者结婚。
Yě yǒu rén zài zhè tiān dìnghūn huòzhě jiéhūn.
Some people also get engaged or married on this day.
这三个情人节各有各的特点。
Zhè sān gè qíngrénjié gè yǒu gè de tèdiǎn.
These three Valentine’s Days each have their own characteristics.
有人喜欢西方情人节的浪漫,有人喜欢七夕节的传统,也有人喜欢520的新潮。
Yǒu rén xǐhuān Xīfāng Qíngrénjié de làngmàn, yǒu rén xǐhuān Qīxījié de chuántǒng, yě yǒu rén xǐhuān wǔ èr líng de xīncháo.
Some people like the romance of the Western Valentine’s Day, some like the tradition of the Qixi Festival, and others like the trendiness of 520.
不管是哪一天,能和自己喜欢的人在一起,就是最幸福的事。
Bùguǎn shì nǎ yī tiān, néng hé zìjǐ xǐhuān de rén zài yīqǐ, jiùshì zuì xìngfú de shì.
No matter which day it is, being able to be with the person you like is the happiest thing.
