Zhōngguó xīnnián, yě jiào Chūnjié, shì Zhōngguó zuì zhòngyào de chuántǒng jiérì.

Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival in China.

Chūnjié shì Zhōngguó nónglì de dì yī gè yuè de dì yī tiān.

The Spring Festival is the first day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Zài guójì tōngyòng de rìlì lǐ, Chūnjié yǒu shíhou zài yī yuè, yǒu shíhou zài èr yuè.

In the international calendar, the Spring Festival is sometimes in January, sometimes in February.

Chūnjié qián, dàjiā huì mǎi xīn yīfu, dǎsǎo fángzi, zhǔnbèi hěn duō hǎochī de shíwù.

Before the Spring Festival, people buy new clothes, clean their houses, and prepare a lot of delicious food.

Zài wàidì gōngzuò de rén dōu huì huí fùmǔ jiā, hé jiārén yìqǐ guònián.

People who work away from home all return to their parents’ home and celebrate the New Year with their family.

Xīnnián de qián yì tiān shì chúxī.

The day before New Year’s Day is New Year’s Eve.

Chúxī de wǎnshang, quán jiā rén zài yìqǐ chī niányèfàn.

On the evening of New Year’s Eve, the whole family gathers to eat the New Year’s Eve dinner.

Nánfāng hé běifāng guònián de xísú yǒu yìxiē bù yíyàng, měi gè dìfang de rénmen zuò de měishí yě bù yíyàng.

Between the South and the North part of China, the customs for celebrating the New Year are quite different. And the delicious food people make in each place is also different.

Bǐrú běifāng rén chī jiǎozi, nánfāng rén chī niángāo hé tāngyuán.

For example, Northern people eat dumplings, and Southern people eat rice cakes and sweet glutinous rice balls.

Běifāng tiānqì lěng, rénmen kěyǐ zài jiālǐ kàn diànshì, wán májiàng, liáotiān, yě kěyǐ chūqù wán xuě, qù miàohuì.

In the North, the weather is cold; people can stay at home watching TV, playing mahjong, and chatting, or they can go out to play in the snow and visit temple fairs.

Nánfāng tiānqì nuǎnhuo, yǒuxiē dìfang yǒu huāshì.

In the South, the weather is warm, and some places have flower markets.

Rénmen kěyǐ qù guàngjiē, kàn huā, mǎi huā.

People can go shopping, enjoy flowers, and buy flowers.

Wúlùn nán běifāng, rénmen dōu huì zài xīnnián fàng biānpào hé yānhuā.

Whether in the South or the North, people all set off firecrackers and fireworks during the New Year.

Xīnnián hái yǒu yī gè hěn zhòngyào de huódòng, jiùshì qù qīnqi péngyou jiā bàinián.

Another very important activity during the New Year is going to relatives’ and friends’ homes to pay a New Year’s visit.

Jiànmiàn shí, rénmen huì shuō “xīnnián hǎo” “gōngxǐ fācái”.

When meeting people, people would say “Happy New Year” and “Wishing you prosperity.”

Xiǎo háizimen zuì xǐhuan bàinián, yīnwèi tāmen néng shōudào hóngbāo.

Little kids like paying New Year’s visit the most, because they can receive red envelopes.

Hóngbāo shì hóngsè de, lǐmiàn zhuāng zhe yāsuìqián, dàibiǎo hǎoyùn.

Red envelopes are in red color, with lucky money inside, representing good luck.

Zhè jiùshì Zhōngguó xīnnián.
