1. Book tickets in advance
Bullet trains in China can be very popular, especially during Chinese public holiday. Here are the public holiday in China:
Date | Holiday |
1 Jan | New Year’s Day (元旦) |
10 Feb to 17 Feb | |
4 Apr to 6 Apr | Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day) (清明节) |
1 May to 5 May | Labor Day (劳动节) |
10 Jun | |
15 Sep to 17 Sep | |
1 Oct to 7 Oct | National Day (国庆节) |
If you are going to travel during these festival time, please make sure you book your tickets at least 1 week in advance. If you are not traveling around in the festival time, you would only need to book the tickets 1 days or even hours before the departure time. You can either book your ticket online through official websites or using a ticketing app, like trip.com or the official train ticket booking app 12306.
2. Bring your passport
Foreigners traveling on Chinese trains are required to present their passport when purchasing tickets and boarding the train. While Chinese residents are required to present ID card. Make sure to carry your passport with you throughout your journey.
3. Choose the right class
Chinese bullet trains offer different classes of service, including second class, first class, and business class (from cheap to expensive). From my opinion, second class is comfortable and affordable, while first class provides more space and amenities. Consider your budget and preferences when choosing your class.
4. Arriveat least 30mins early at the station
Plan to arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This allows time for security checks and boarding procedures. You can either choose to scan your passport or use the paper tickets to get through the departure gate. If you need to collect your paper tickets, you can get the paper ticket at the ticket machines at the station. You can get your paper ticket at both of your departure station and arrival station.

5. Follow signage and announcements
Train stations in China can be large and busy, so pay attention to signage and announcements to find your way to the correct platform and boarding area. Information is usually displayed in both Chinese and English.
6. Keep your ticket and passport handy
You’ll need to present your ticket and passport for inspection before boarding the train. Keep them easily accessible, and be prepared to show them multiple times throughout your journey.
7. Service on the train
Bullet trains in China offer a smooth and comfortable ride, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery as you travel between cities. Most bullet trains have dining cars or trolleys that offer a variety of snacks, drinks, and meals for purchase. Restrooms are typically located at the end of each car. Many trains are equipped with power outlets at each seat, allowing passengers to charge their electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops during the journey. Some bullet trains offer free Wi-Fi access onboard, allowing passengers to stay connected and browse the internet during the journey. However, the availability and quality of Wi-Fi may vary depending on the train and route.
Alright, these are the tips that I would like to share with you if you are going to take the bullet train in China. Take care and enjoy every moment of your journey. Safe travels!
